Nummelan Portti Wetland Park
Nummelan Portti is a verdant seven-hectare park, with a wetland area covering a little over one hectare at its center. The area is located in Nummela, between Porintie and the Ridalinlahti bay of Lake Enäjärvi.
The area is bordered by a wide cinder path approximately one kilometer in length. The path is also reasonable well-suited for wheelchairs and strollers as well as bicycles. Along the path, you can find informational signs with information of the area and its ecosystem as well as a birdwatching tower where visitors can observe the animal life in the area.
The Nummelan Portti Wetland was created to celebrate UN’s International Year of Biodiversity in 2010. The park was built on the mouth of an approximately 500-hectare catchment basin, where it effectively reduces the release of surface waters and chemicals to Lake Enäjärvi. The park also offers a diverse environment to birds and other animals. The area is home to more than one hundred plant species.
You can read more about the purification process generated by the wetland in an article from the University of Helsinki (in Finnish):
